Project P16761: Steady and Unsteady Transitionmodeling to Turbulence

Project sponsored by the Austrian Science Foundation FWF

Project: Start 11.2003, End 10.2006

Project Applicants / Contact: Dr. Wolfgang Sanz, Dipl.-Ing. Rene Pecnik

Objective:

In Thermal Turbomachines especially in Jet Engines the laminar- turbulent Boundary Layer transition has affect on the development of the Boundary Layer, Flow Separation, Losses, Efficiency and Heat Transfer. Hence an exact Computation of this process in Turbomachines is essential for designing efficient and reliable machines. But it is very hard to compute the process of Boundary Layer Transition with only one model over a wide range.
In this Project numerical studies are accomplished, to analyse the strength and the weakness of different models. Based on the results of these studies the used Code at the Institute will be modified and extended. This purpose is done in co operation with international research groups and with the Department of Metrology in Turbomachinery at the Institute. This novel model should describe steady and unsteady transition for separated and attached flows in a wide application range.
