The department covers following areas:
Education:
We teach our students the principles of measurement techniques (especially optical measurement techniques), analysis and evaluation of the recorded data. In our Laboratories they have the chance to apply their knowledge in experiments, for example vibration measurements on a steam turbine blade by the use of laser vibrometers and temperature and pressure measurements on an small scaled turbo jet engine. After the measurements students have to analyse, interpret and evaluate their results in form of a technical report.
We give these future engineers and researchers the knowledge and experience to assert oneselfs in their future career.
Research:
In our research we are mainly concentrated on transonic flows through turbomachines and within this wide area we do the most work on high pressure (transonic) turbine stages. A transonic cascade and a transonic test turbine is available at the Institute. For detailed information please go to the description of our Test Rigs.
Within the next year a new test rig will be finished, where we will investigate low pressure turbine stages.
All rigs are designed with full optical access to use our non-intrusive optical measurement systems. Furthermore all rigs can be adapted easily to meet different challenges.
Co-operation with and tasks for the Industry:
We do measurement campaigns for and with the Industry (aside from our projects). These measurements include vibration measurements with our laservibrometers, thermography, PIV, LDA and so on. For example we measured vibrations in a heat recovery boiler and on rotor shafts. Temperature distribution in a sewage basin was also detected. Furthermore we co-operate with other technical universities.
